Dating the Rg-Veda by Dr. Koenraad Elst Edited by N. Rajaram The determination of the age in which Vedic literature started and flourished has its consequences for history. The oldest text, the Rg-Veda, is full of precise references to places and natural phenomena in what are now Punjab and Haryana, and was unmistakably composed in that part of India. The date at which it was composed is a firm terminus ante quem for the presence of the Vedic Aryans into India. They may have come from abroad or they may have been fully native, but by the time of the Rg-Veda, they were certainly Indians without memory of a foreign homeland.
God is for every human and for every form of life and for the entire universe, no matter in what name or form we call or see God, no matter in what path we try to reach God - God is for all.
Yes padmini, in those days if they had not securely stored those valuables then we wouldnt be seeing them today. But see how our sickulars are reacting on the discovery saying we should spend it all to reduce poverty, provide education etc. These people have no value for this treasure apart from the materialistic value of the yellow metal in it.
If it was in any other country, they would have preserved it forever for future generations to see, in a secure museum. Only in our country we have no historic, ancient, antique, archaeological, cultural value for such finds.
People treat it as if the ancients had stored it for us to sell it. Feels really bad. But the question is why the current generation is not able to do the same.
How Much of Indian History Is Really True? - Sanjeev Sanyal - Rewriting Indian History -#SangamTalks
So I think current and future generation will not invent some thing equal to vedas. Very true, as we are becoming more technologically advanced and as we create more and more modern machines which do most of our work, the irony is that at the same time we are finding less and less time for ourselves.
Actually it should have been the other way round, like in ancient times we used to spend a lot of our time doing things which are today done by machines for us, be it washing machines, computers, ATMs, fast food centers and what not, and still as each day passes by we are having less and less time for ourselves and our families!
Hi Guru, Thanks for your reply! Whatever you said is absolutely right. Swami Vivekanada says to attain a intellectual spiritual purity a person should have physical and Mental purity.
As you said due to usage of machines a person becomes more and more lazy hence the person loses physical purity. I think as much as we can we should do our work by ourself to maintain the physical purity. Further to my earlier comment, is there any website, from where we can read through and understand the meaning of vedas? But I feel, the language of the Vedas would be hidden enough for a layman to understand kindly comment.
Reading translations of vedas in English is useless, most people who translated them know only elementary Sanskrit and fail to see that the Sanskrit terms are contextual in nature - which is why they come to silly prejudiced conclusions like during vedic times Brahmins ate beef and so on, while what the actual text is saying is that : I suggest that you learn Sanskrit from experts or read vedic interpretations in English by such experts like Aurobindo Ghosh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak etc.
Hi, I have just started to follow your blogs They are very informative, and answers quite a lot of my questions Could you tell something about why there are 4 vedas? And I used to say to people that it is absurd, when they tell me Sanskrit is the closest language to understand computers, but now I also started to think whether the rishis had also realized the existence of computers?
Realization cannot be any answer to all these, they might have also existed during those periods, that is what I believe, and I wonder, when all these had already been realized or discovered, why are we working from scratch now on? Originally the vedas were just one single large text. It was sage Vyasa who classified this large single text into four vedas as we know today. In terms of lost knowledge we have two issues here 1. The actual knowledge text being lost like for instance many of the ancient texts are not available today 2.
The interpretation of the language being lost - most people do not know Sanskrit today and are unable to understand the vedas - where as those who understand the vedas are largely out of touch with modern scientific terminology and hence are unable to relate and explain it in modern terms.
This happens in all civilizations. Be it Egyptian, be it Babylonian, be it Mesapotomian, be it Sumerian and so on. Indian vedic civilization is the only one which even after thousands of years has still retained a large if not all of its ancient texts and knowledge.
For instance, the method used in plastic surgery today is almost the same as the one mentioned by Charaka in his Charaka Samhita. Even today the Dabur Chyavacountryconnectionsqatar.comash is manufactured using the thousands of years old formulae created by Ashwini Devatas to make Chyavan Rishi young. So all knowledge is definitely not lost.
The very root of modern mathematics, place value system and zero comes from ancient India, so that is not lost either.
On the other hand, for those who claim that if the knowledge was really there in ancient India, then it cannot be lost and it should be known even today, I ask a simple question. We can see the giant Egyptian pyramids even today, there are pyramids which contain more than lakhs of giant stones used to build it each weighing couple of tons. But where is the knowledge today about HOW the ancient Egyptians built it?
Where did that knowledge get lost for thousands of years in between, till modern science reinvented that knowledge? So we are working from scratch now again is to mostly translate the ancient texts in modern terminology. For instance there are loads of ayurvedic texts which mention about the medicinal properties of some great herbs, the problem is in modern world we do not know what is the corresponding plant in our terminology today.
Say for instance the ancient ayurvedic text talks about a planet X and its magical properties in healing skin diseases.
The problem is we do not know which is that plant today, it might still be around and we are calling it with a different name today. But which one? It is questions like this we are trying to answer.
And the reason this happened is that India underwent a lot of turmoil in the past one or two millenium starting with the rise of Buddhism, to islamic invasions, to British colonialization etc, and in this process the actual expertise was lost, but the texts were somehow preserved and passed down from generation to generation.
And today we are trying to read that text as our generations we now have enough time and the means to look into them.
Astronomical dating of vedas
And my gut feeling is that these texts will also reveal answers to a lot of problems in the modern science and in the modern world. Nicholas Kazanas, our own contemporary greek and sanskrit scholar based in Athens has done extensive work on vedas. His scientific methods of dating the mahabharata and rig veda are very facinating.
He presented a paper in at a conference in Los Angeles. Google his name to find his papers. I understood from different quarters that Vedas are not written by anyone and it is indeed the breath of Iswara. Meaning Vedas and Iswara are one and inseperable. Vedas are called Apauresheyawithout Purushameaning without Authour.
From the metaphysical point of view if Vedas have authors then theylose status of eternity. Yes Krishna, you are absolutely right - which is why I compared it to subjects like physics - Einstein did not author relativity, he only realized it - similarly the vedic Rishis only realized the secrets of the universe in the form of the chants. Just like the laws of science are equal to the universe - so are vedas equal to the divine.
That absurd. I mean lets not try to prove something is incorrect bcoz we know quite well its incorrect. Atleast that was what I read in my school :. Yes Mohan, starting the school textbooks I read in my school days, all school textbooks teach BCE as the date of the Rigveda, and even I believed in it as long as I was schooling, I became educated only after I left my school :.
How are you? Remember me. I am long time visitor of your blog. Especially interested in the topics of Ancient Hindu History. Very Good Article on the dating of Vedas. For quite few days, I have been researching on few things. Could you do some research or even write an article on this:. This is regarding the population of the Indian Subcontinent, in the Ancient Ages vis-a vis the known world.
I have recently gone through an article of Bojil Kolarov a renowned scholar on Indic Studies. In this at one place; he has given the population estimates at the time of Emperor Ashoka BC as: Indian Subcontinent - million China - 60 million Europe - 30 million Whole Known World - million.
I just could not think of anybody, other than you who could do perfect research on this and quench my thirst. Please consider my request.
Regards Ashish Savya Sachi. Also to those who say that India was never united before British came - were all other countries united the way they are today ever since the dawn of history?

Often times, scholars use the astronomical signs mentioned in our ancient texts to date those texts. The problem with this is that they do not provide definitive dates in themselves, but provide dates with repetitious cycles unless additional.
So let us not take the credit away from ancient India :. Good one Kaushik, the difference though exists between Brahman and Brahma, Brahman being the universal consciousness timeless and spacelessBrahma being the physical universe we live in.
Narayan or Vishnu represents the Brahman, so the symbolism is Brahma springing out of the navel of Vishnu Brahman. Thanks for the nice article. Pls clarify and help me buy the book soon Sorry Umesh and thank you very much for your comments and identifying the spelling mistake : Yes, the book is Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling Of The Mahabharata - written from a perspective of telling Mahabharatha to children and also narrating many little known sides of Mahabharatha.
They may have come from abroad or they may have been fully native, but by the time of the Rg-Veda, they were certainly Indians without memory of a foreign homeland. In a rather shoddy way, Friedrich Max Muller launched the hypothesis that the Rg-Veda had to be dated to about BC, and even though he later retracted it, that arbitrary guess has become the orthodoxy.

By Some vedic hymns talk about incidents when Vega was the pole star and as per astronomical dating vega was the pole star the last time during BCE! By the way wrote an article on the Origin and Dating of the Vedas.
It is forgotten too often that in his own day, other scholars rejected this extremely late date on a variety of grounds. You cannot credibly cram the complicated linguistic, cultural and philosophical developments which are in evidence in Vedic literature, into just a few centuries.
But since this argument of plausibility can always be countered with the argument that unlikely developments are not strictly impossible, we need a firmer basis to decide this chronological question. The most explicit chronology would be provided by astronomical markers of time. One of the earliest estimates of the date of the Vedas was at once among the most scientific.
Inthe Scottish mathematician John Playfair demonstrated that the starting-date of the astronomical observations recorded in the tables still in use among Hindu astrologers of which three copies had reached Europe between and had to be BCE. His proposal was dismissed as absurd by some, but it was not refuted by any scientist. Nay, his aim goes still deeper, for by the same means he endeavors to overturn the Mosaic account, and sap the very foundation of our religion: for if we are to believe in the antiquity of Hindu books, as he would wish us, then the Mosaic account is all a fable, or a fiction.
Bentley did not object to astronomy per se, in so far as it could be helpful in showing up the falsehood of Brahminical scriptures.
However, it did precisely the reverse. Falsehood in this context could have meant that the Brahmins falsely claimed high antiquity for their texts by presenting as ancient astronomical observations recorded in Scripture what were in fact back-calculations from a much later age.
But Playfair showed that this was impossible. Back-calculation of planetary positions is a highly complex affair requiring knowledge of a number of physical laws, universal constants and actual measurements of densities, diameters and distances.
Even today it is not always easy, NSR] Though Brahminical astronomy was remarkably sophisticated for its time, it could only back-calculate planetary position of the presumed Vedic age with an inaccuracy margin of at least several degrees of arc. With our modern knowledge, it is possible to determine what the actual positions were, and what the results of back-calculations with the Brahminical formulae would have been, e.

This agreement is the more remarkable, that the ancient sagesby their own rules for computing the motion of the fixed stars, could not have assigned this place to Aldebaran for the beginning of Calyougham, had they calculated it from a modern observation. So, it turns out that the data given by the sages corresponded not with the results deduced from their formulae, but with the actual positions observed, and this, according to Playfair, for nine different astronomical parameters.
This is a bit much to explain away as coincidence or sheer luck.
The Indian tables give the same annual variation of the moon as that discovered by Tycho Brahe - a variation unknown to the school of Alexandria and also to the Arabs.
Failing this advanced knowledge, the data in the ancient records must be based on actual observation. However, modern scholars have claimed that the Kali-Yuga system of time-reckoning was a much younger invention, not attested before the 6th century AD. Mathematician Richard L.

Currently, this annual motion is about The process is slow, but cumulative. In terms of people from earth observing the stars, it looks like the constellations of the zodiac move counter-cyclical to the earth's motion around the sun. This journey over 25, years covers the 12 constellations of the sky with the sun rising on the vernal equinox in the same zodiac for approximately 2, years in each constellation.
Since there is also a precession of the earth's axis, the equinox dates keep changing every year, and when seen from a stellar background the constellation in which the sun rises on the vernal equinox also keeps changing over a period of time.
During the Vedic age, the vernal equinox is considered to have occurred in the month of Margashira named after a star lambda orionis in the constellation of Orion. In our times today, the sun rises in the background of Pisces Meena Rashi on the vernal equinox we will transition to Aquarius from Pisces in the year 2, AD.
There are 4 constellations Gemini, Taurus, Aries, and Pisces that the sun has traveled through between the time of the Vedas and today.
