If the only thing they are good at is, say, school, they naturally would base their self-worth on that. They may also value others heavily on these factors because they like to believe that is what everyone else should value strongly as well.
If you don't love yourself then you're obviously not happy with who you are. Before you even think about dating, let alone being in a relationship, take some time to work on self-esteem. You need to find a way to be happy being you. Until you find confidence and true love for yourself, you're better off being single.
