Absolute dating is used to determine the exact date of rocks by using its atoms. Scientists need to understand radioactive decay in order to absolute date. Atoms decay by losing a neutron and gaining a proton. When the number of protons in an atom is changed we call this radioactive decay and through this process, new elements are formed. When the element Uranium decays, it ends up as lead which isn't radioactive and therefore won't decay anymore.

Using carbon to date rocks is called radiocarbon dating and is only good up to about 50, years because eventually there isn't enough carbon left to use. By measuring the amounts of parent and daughter materials in rock and by understanding the half-life of the parent we can calculate the age of rocks. Geologists need to use the right isotopes to determine ages because for example fossils 1 billion years old don't have carbon left so we have to use another isotope like uranium which has a half-life of 4.

This radiometric dating technique is used when dating igneous and metamorphic rock, but not sedimentary rock. Why do you think that is?

Using uranium scientists have discovered that the oldest rock found is 3. Scientists used that data to estimate the age of the Earth to be around 4. In this topic we will focus on Earth's interior and how, through the use of seismic data, we have come to understand the different properties within Earth.

We will also focus on earthquakes and how we use seismic waves to locate their epicenters. In this topic we will learn about the beginnings of Earth and the extreme changes it has undergone.

We will also focus on how major extinction periods throughout geologic history have changed the development of life on Earth.

In this topic we will look at surface processes and the mechanisms that help shape our planet Earth. We will also focus on the different agents of erosion and be able to identify the geologic features that each of them create over time.

Enter the letter of the rock unit or geologic structure in the proper Event sequence. The geologic events of tilting, folding and erosion do not have single letter labels. Type the word "tilting", "folding" or "erosion" in the proper position.

In this topic we look at the beginnings of astronomy and see how technology has allowed mankind to gain a better understanding of our Universe. We will focus on the heliocentric model and learn about how Earth fits into the Solar System, Galaxy and Universe.

In this chapter, we will discover the relationships between weather variables and see how a change in one can affect a change in another.

The Physical Setting: Earth Science is related to the field of science called Earth Science. In this course you will be studying the different processes, relationships, mechanisms, and concepts that help us interpret our planet Earth. Home About Homework Topics contact. Faults can offset layers that tell us that the fault happened after the layers were deposited. If magma intrudes, creating a sill, we know that the sill is younger than the layer above and below, because the layers already had to exist in order for a sill to be formed.

You can tell that a batholith is younger than the layers that are on top because a batholith intrudes into current layers.

Layers 4 and 8 represent periods of erosion by using squiggly lines. Number 7 has to have come after because it cuts across all of the other layers.

Layer 10 represents a fault, in this case, a normal fault caused by tension. It happened last and we know that because all of the other layers had to have been there before the Earth faulted.

Sometimes rock layers are missing due to weathering and erosions. These gaps in rock layers are called unconformities. After layers have been eroded, other sediments will be laid on top.

These gaps represent a missing period in our relative time scale. An angular unconformity occurs when rocks are tilted, then eroded and then new sediment is deposited on top.

A nonconformity occurs when igneous and metamorphic rocks are exposed due to uplift, eroded and then sediments are deposited on top. An example would be an intrusive sill that was exposed due to weathering and erosion and then reburied by overlying sediment.

Again, this represents a gap in the rock record. We don't know how long it took for the rock to be exposed because the evidence was weathered away.
